Place the 1/2 butternut squash, cut side down, in a glass pie pan with about a 1/4 inch of water. Cover the pan tightly with plastic wrap.
Microwave for 8-10 minutes, until the squash is just soft when pierced with a fork, but not mushy. Carefully remove the plastic wrap, then dice the squash into 1/4 inch cubes and set aside to cool slightly.
