Melt the butter in the Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Once the butter is shimmering, add the pears cut-side down and cook until browned, about 8 to 10 minutes.
Flip the pears so they're skin-side up, then pour in the wine and add the star anise and cinnamon stick to the pan. Transfer the pan to the preheated oven and roast for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the wine has reduced to a light syrup and the pears are tender when pierced with a knife.
