Old-fashioned Danish Apple Trifle
This Danish apple trifle combines warm, vanilla-scented apples with crisp, buttery breadcrumbs and a cloud of whipped cream. The apples cook down into a coarse, tart-sweet sauce, brightened with lemon, while the breadcrumbs toast up with butter and sugar until lightly golden. To keep the breadcrumbs crunchy, assemble the trifle just before you plan to serve it. You can layer it in a single large glass bowl or prepare individual portions.

Cook the Apples
Peel and core the 800g cooking apples, then cut them into cubes. Transfer the apple cubes to a saucepan with 1/4 cup water, 1 tsp vanilla powder, and 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Bring the mixture to a boil, then cover the pan and reduce the heat to medium-low.
