In a saucepan, combine the whole milk with 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of the heavy cream. Set it over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves and you see small bubbles just starting to form around the edges.
Return the milk and sugar mixture to medium heat. Slowly pour in the egg and heavy cream mixture, whisking constantly as you do to temper the eggs.
Continue to whisk over medium heat until the custard thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, becoming creamy and smooth.
