Chocolate Puff Pastry Squares

1. 01

   Preheat Oven

   Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

   Cut Pastry

   Unfold the puff pastry sheet and cut it lengthwise into thirds. Then, cut each of those strips into 6 rectangles, aiming for 18 rectangles total.

   Fill and Seal Pastry

   Place a small pile of chocolate chips on one half of a pastry rectangle. Fold the other half over the chocolate chips, then press the edges together firmly with fork tines to seal, much like you would a ravioli.

   This helps keep the chocolate contained as the pastry puffs in the oven.

   Arrange on Sheet

   Arrange the filled pastry squares on a nonstick cookie sheet, or line a regular sheet with parchment paper first. Continue filling and sealing the remaining pastry rectangles until all are ready for baking.

   Brush and Top

   Brush the tops of each pastry square with melted butter, then gently press a bit of flaked coconut onto each one.

   Bake Pastries

   Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the coconut turns a deep brown and the puff pastry squares are a pale golden color.

   Cool and Garnish

   Remove the squares from the oven and let them cool for 10 minutes. Just before serving, sift a light dusting of powdered sugar over the tops.

   Serve Warm

   These are best served warm, perhaps with a hot cup of black tea or a tall glass of cold milk.
